How much homework is involved?

This is a full year of reading for a homeschool kid in 5th-8th grades. These books are in chronological order - so you travel through American history while you read the best in children's literature! There's classic historical fiction and biographies that come to life!

Our co-op used the following summary to go with this book list:

Travel through time and story—from explorers to patriots, frontier children to modern heroes—through literature, primary sources, and hands-on discovery. Chore List for Children

It was a jarring conversation for some of my friends when I said, "Yes, my 13yr old is really in charge of all the meals, planning, cooking and shopping for the year."

I didn't start out thinking that was the goal or even a realistic possibility. We had read Little House On the Prairie when the girls were in 2nd grade & Kindergarten. In it, Ma left the girls (I think they were preteens) with the baby and the house for a week! They knew how to do all the work AND did the spring cleaning to surprise Ma.

When I first read that, I thought “HOW could Ma leave them like that? There were soooo many dangers in those days!” Then I started re-rethinking my perceptions on childhood. I honestly believe we have an artificial infancy concept of childhood. Rather than considering that childhood as the training ground for adulthood, our society thinks children are to be coddled, entertained and considered unable to be functioning, contributing members of society even while they’re children. Hmmm…. So if God made children capable of more responsibility, are we DISabling them to not let them live to that potential? Hmmmm.... food for thought and prayer for me.

So I made it a pie-in-the-sky goal that each of my children would know how to do every job in the house that I could teach them by the time they were 13. Then at 13 I would teach them to juggle all the things. I wasn’t taught how to multi-task or juggle and it took me YEARS of motherhood before I felt like I was doing anything but failing. I wanted my kids to be a little better off than that.

Each year, each child switches jobs to become proficient in a job for the year. This is the rough schedule of chores as the children progress in maturity.

Age 4 chore: Set the table

Age 5 chore: Sweep the floor

Age 6 chore: Wash the table / Mop the floor

Age 7 chore: Take out the trash

Age 8 chore: Empty the dishwasher

They had to empty it each time we ran it (2-3 times per day). YES, I lost alot of dishes on the ceramic floor this way so we ended up switching to plastic for our main dishes.

Age 9 chore: Laundry

Yes, all the laundry in the house - but each child over the age of about 8 had to fold and put away their own clean clothes.

Age 10 chore: Mow the lawn

Somewhere we often end up having a “catch-up” year – a kid will prefer a job and ask for an extra year on it before going to the next harder job -OR- they need more practice on a job and get stuck on it for another year until they’ve mastered it.

Age 11 chore: Wash Dishes

Dishes which included wiping down counters, etc. and keeping the kitchen clean after every meal.

Age 12 chore: Cook Dinner

I plan and they learn to cook dinner each night. I feel like it’s such a challenging task to get all the main and side dishes to come out at the same time and on the table hot (or cold) that it takes a lot of practice.

Age 13 chore: Meal Planning & Cooking for the family

I gave her as much input and advice from me as she wanted and I also looked everything over. Then I drove and went shopping with her.

Grace in the Grit: A Dyslexic Teen's Path to the Trades

ADD and dyslexia only taught him to work hard, and while we made accommodations and extra effort, we didn’t make exceptions for what some considered “disabilities”. The word was never spoken in our house. Making sure to put him in a position to experience success in his academics, was one of the best things I did to prepare him for adulthood.

However, all the hard work and true success - that’s all him!

Early Struggles

Studying, specifically reading had always been tough for my son. At the point he was diagnosed—eighth grade—he was reading at a third-grade level. On a scale of mild, moderate, severe and profound - he was diagnosed with moderate dyslexia. I was temporarily devastated. We had arduously been working with him and reading tutors including teachers for years by then, to almost no avail. Once he was diagnosed we began at home therapy 4 days per week.

High School Years

Assistive technology helped him in high school, along with lots of slogging through books. He got used to learning in multiple ways, but reading and learning through books remained his weakest area. Middle schoolers and high schoolers don't always see themselves clearly. We made a point to notice and point out his strengths, often in non-academic areas.

We gave him five years of high school. That gave him the breathing space he needed to gain knowledge at his own pace and allowed us to focus on dyslexia therapy without worrying about what he might be missing in other subject areas. In our house, we had one important rule: never shame or ridicule someone who is making an effort. The effort counted. Not the outcome.

All that said, he got through Algebra 1—but it took three years and that was the furthest extent of his high school math. We got a "study buddy" who was a little younger but also struggled. He ended up helping his study partner through several chapters. I refused to put more pressure on him than he was already putting on himself.

Algebra Was A Barrier

He needed to pass an algebra test to get into plumbing school. He used algebra games on his phone to "play" and keep up his skills for about six months before the test. I was shaking in my boots about that test. Testing was never his strong suit. As much as possible during high school, I chose not to share his test scores with him, focusing instead on his effort and progress. We might stay on a concept or chapter for quite a while, but I wanted to protect his confidence and ensure he didn’t define his worth by test results that didn’t reflect how hard he was working. I was extremely anxious for him and prayed through all of it.

Why He Succeeded

I believe several things we did helped him succeed:

Consistent hours of dyslexia therapy, which taught him not just tools to read, but coping mechanisms to compensate without compromising the accuracy of reading.
The severity of his dyslexia, which made made the assistive technology a help, but not a crutch.
Extra years of high school and a low-pressure environment.
Expectations of regular, rigorous academics like chemistry, honors history, honors literature, and required essays and papers with any and every resource and assistance we could find to make the subject more do-able for him.

Through this, he learned to do hard schoolwork and push through while taking advantage of all his resources. He graduated second in his class from plumbing school, but it was intensely challenging. He had to spend countless extra hours studying after working all day.

Interest was Sparked for Plumbing

When we saw he had a knack for fixing things and expressed interest in plumbing, we gave him every opportunity. He fixed every sink and drain in our house, helped my girlfriend’s husband dig out their septic tank, and redid our bathroom floor. Friends asked him to help with their plumbing too. At 15, we found every way for him to slowly build his skillset.

I know nothing about plumbing, but I walked alongside him every step I could. At 15, I offered to get library books on plumbing, but he wasn’t interested. So instead, we watched how-to videos weekly. If he had needed motivation, I would’ve made his favorite snacks and sat beside him to talk through the content. Whatever it took to give him another path into learning.

First Job and First Steps

He got his first gopher job ("go for this", "go for that") at 16 and started the day after his 17th birthday. The owner had come to fix our plumbing, and I brought up my son’s interest and included his dyslexia in the conversation. My son sat in on the conversation but didn’t say a word—just shook the guy’s hand. The owner of the plumbing company had dyslexia, too!

A year later, the plumber came again, and this time my son spoke up a little. The guy told him to submit an application. I helped him write a resume, we practiced interview skills, and filled out the application together in the car. My son walked it in alone.

Plumbing School Trials and Triumph

A non-union shop gave him a job as a gopher for a year before plumbing school. That helped a lot. He learned the rhythms, the names and uses of tools, the workload, and the culture of the job.

Then it got too heavy. He was overwhelmed. We encouraged him to quit. He took a year off and worked at Lowe’s in the plumbing department. It kept him around contractors and gave him an alternative path—one he hated—which confirmed that plumbing school was still the goal. Giving him that freedom, and telling him he was more important than his career, helped him return with inner strength.

Next, he got another gopher job with an independent shop. Because they had limited school slots, he ended up doing another year as an apprentice and chose to let someone else at the shop go through school first. I think he was a little nervous about school. But all that experience paid off: he tested out of a full year of plumbing school.

One of the most competent plumbers took him under his wing. He taught him one-on-one whenever something wasn’t clicking. The pattern of learning hands-on, then watching someone else, then redoing it himself really helped him retain the material.

That approach broke the learning into smaller, more manageable pieces.

There were more things we were prepared to do if he needed. I was ready to read all his textbooks aloud (since they weren’t available in audio). I was ready to prep for tests with him using all the formats we had learned worked best: flashcards, colored ink, few words on a page, games, encouragement, and tracking his successes - for example instead of 'you got 2 wrong', "You got 98 right."

He’s one of five kids, and I was homeschooling his younger siblings anyway. Helping him was already part of my rhythm.

The Timeline

Here’s how it all stacked up:

Five years of high school

The Pressure and the Payoff

The stress during plumbing school was real. He was anxious, struggled to sleep, and honestly wasn’t pleasant to be around. But he made it through—and graduated near the top. Even with severe dyslexia, it’s doable if you’re willing to walk beside your child through the homework, the test prep, and the hard parts.

Looking back, my son’s journey is shows the truth that learning doesn’t have to follow a straight line to be meaningful or successful. With steady encouragement, patience, and a commitment to honoring effort over outcome, our dyslexic students can thrive. My son will be the first to tell you that I didn't do it all right and made so many mistakes. He's also commented that our family’s values—advocacy, emotional resilience, and a refusal to shame struggle—created the foundation he needed to persevere. Real-world learning, hands-on experience, and a strong support system helped turn challenges into stepping stones. His success isn’t just a personal triumph—it’s living proof that the right kind of support can open doors that once felt closed.

It was a long road. But he made it. While we assisted - he did the work - he gets the credit and all the success. It's what I hoped and prayed for.

Hey Mama, Let’s Talk About Burnout (and How to Keep It From Taking Over)

Hey sweet homeschool mama,

Can we just take a minute to exhale together? Like a big, full-belly, sigh-it-out kind of breath?

Because if you’re here, you’re probably tired. Maybe a little (or a lot) frazzled. Maybe questioning why you ever thought you could do this homeschooling thing in the first place.

Let me tell you something from one homeschool mom to another: You are not alone. Burnout is real. It creeps in slowly—like laundry, or ants in the kitchen—and before you know it, you’re staring blankly at a math worksheet wondering if “unschooling” just means “watching documentaries and giving up.”

I’ve been there. More than once. And after more than two decades of homeschooling my kids through toddler tantrums, science experiments gone wrong, curriculum regrets, and a few too many cold coffees, I’ve learned a few things about keeping burnout at bay.

You Can’t Pour From an Empty Cup (No, Really)

I used to roll my eyes when people said “self-care.” I thought it was code for spa days and scented candles, and who has time for that? But it turns out, it’s more about soul-care. Taking five minutes alone with your Bible before the day explodes. Drinking your coffee while it’s still hot (miracles do happen). Asking your husband or a friend to take over for a Saturday morning so you can wander Target in peace. And think your own thoughts.

Taking care of yourself is not selfish—it’s survival. And no one else can judge.

Absolutely — nurturing yourself as a homeschool mom is not a luxury, it’s a lifeline. You pour so much into your children, spouse, your home, and… but you need refilling too. Here are some gentle, life-giving categories of self-care, each with a few simple and specific ideas to help you build strength, not just survive the day.

Emotional Self-Care

Your feelings matter. You can’t always control the chaos, but you can honor your heart within it.

Gratitude journaling Start or end the day by jotting down three small things you're thankful for — the way your child laughed today, your warm coffee, sunlight on the floor.

Scheduled processing time Give yourself permission to call a friend or write a journal entry just to release emotions knowing your focus is not complaining — it's processing. Ask your friend to pray for you and with you.

Mental Self-Care

Homeschooling is mentally demanding — give your brain a moment to stretch, rest, or simply be.

Read for pleasure (not prep!) Keep a novel or inspirational book on your nightstand just for you — even if you only read one page at a time.

Dear Homeschool Mom: Don’t Stress Kindergarten – Just Live the Moment

Take a deep breath.

If you’re homeschooling a kindergartener and feeling the pressure to “get it all right,” you’re not alone. There’s so much talk out there—about standards, schedules, and curriculum—that it’s easy to forget one simple truth:

Kindergarten doesn’t have to be hard.

In fact, it shouldn’t be.

Childhood Is Not a Race

Your five-year-old isn’t falling behind. They’re not late to the game. They’re right where they need to be: curious, energetic, imaginative, and eager to explore the world around them. Learning at this age happens all the time—whether you’re reading a story, baking muffins, digging in the garden, or building a blanket fort.

The truth is, kids this age learn so easily and so naturally. You don’t have to force it or turn every moment into a structured lesson. Most of the time, if they’re engaged, safe, and loved, they’re learning more than you realize .

The Magic of Everyday Moments

Launching Your Preschooler into Kindergarten

Moving from preschool to kindergarten can be as gentle as moving from one room to another. Often, for homeschoolers it’s just a matter of introducing a child to the “next” step in academics and litttle changes in the way of routines or lifestyle for the child. There are times when it’s helpful to know what benchmarks you’re shooting for, though.

These are not hard and fast rules, but more like suggestions or guidelines for Kindergarten readiness.

1. Fine Motor Development

– We work on strengthening hand muscles to prepare for writing and cutting.

Activities that strengthen hand muscles include:

Kneading play dough and bread dough
Stringing beads
Pushing sand
Lacing (cards, shoes, etc.)
Using tongs to pick up small items
Exercising pencil grip by playing with Legos, small cars, doll clothes, etc.

2. Reading Readiness

– Children who display signs of reading readiness are most successful in kindergarten. One of the best ways to cultivate reading readiness is by enjoying quality children’s literature with your child.

Some signs of reading readiness are:

Recognizes rhyming words (e.g. What rhymes with cat? “fat” or “cow”?)
Tells the meaning of simple words
Uses left-to-right progression
Recognizes some letters by name and sound
Distinguishes beginning sounds in words
Demonstrates the ability to listen to a story
Answers questions about a story
Writes some letters and numbers
Counts objects using one-to-one correspondence
Recognizes numbers 1-10

3. Social and Emotional Development

- steps help children interact in a group setting.

Knows full name
Verbally interacts with others
Exhibits self-control and a cooperative nature
Recognizes authority
Listens to and follows basic instructions
Gets along and plays with other children
Can work independently

Children move through stages at different ages and there is no “one size fits all” education. Be gentle with yourself and your child and follow at their pace. For an anxious or driven parent who only wants the best for their child, this can be a nerve-wracking pace. However, learning to trust your child’s innate ability to learn and your own judgement over the expectations of the world will ultimately develop you and your budding homeschool scholar in fantastic shape!

One of the greatest advantages of homeschooling is the ability to nurture the whole child—mind, body, and heart. Raising well-rounded kids does NOT mean signing them up for every possible class or stressing over packed schedules. It DOES MEAN being intentional in how we shape their learning and childhood experiences to support their academic, social, emotional, and practical development. Here's some real-life examples and the long-term benefits that come with them.

1. Focus on the Whole Child

Homeschooling allows for flexibility in supporting a child’s emotional and character development alongside academics. Start each day with a morning check-in: "How are you feeling today?" Read stories that highlight kindness and courage, and talk about what your child would do in similar situations. Practice conflict resolution through role-play or research it and learn it for yourself so you can teach it. Homeschool learning isn't just for the kids.

Ongoing gains: Kids who understand and manage their emotions are more likely to succeed in relationships, workplace settings, and leadership roles. Emotional intelligence is a powerful predictor of lifelong success.

See how the U.S. government’s Indian policies affected homesteaders.

Through our study, we’ll learn history, science, literature, and music. We’ll also explore geography, writing, health, nutrition, Bible, character building, life application and more through hands-on activities, games, crafts, video clips, and discussion. We’ll play games, do crafts and explore as many activities of the time as we can fit in.

In addition to reading through the greater portion of the Little House series, students will be assigned a topic each week to research and “teach the class”. It will be things and events from the reading that week. Parents are welcome to participate in class with us.

Older students are welcome to sign up and engage with us, understanding the academics are geared to the stated age range. Younger siblings are welcome to sign up if accompanied by a parent to help out.

This class is ungraded.

Because the kids "teach the class" this is an incredibly rich educational environment and at the same time an easy class to teach to a group of kids.

How Do I Tell My Child He’s Dyslexic?

When we presented the concept of dyslexia to our 8th grade son just before having him tested, we presented it as a positive (with the tiny negative that you have to work harder to read — but hard work is a virtue, anyway.) Once he was diagnosed as dyslexic, we described what dyslexia was including the brain differences to show him that it had nothing to do with his ACTIONS (he was not at fault for being different), but just biologically different. For example just as he’s a little taller than his brother — biological differences don’t have judgements attached to them, they just are. We put all those differences as honestly and positively as we could. Then…

He watched the interview with Steven Spielberg discussing his dyslexia , then we discussed it, then we watched Indiana Jones.

I continued to read him every positive article ( dyslexics being sought by the astrophysics community and the UK’s spy organization ) & Famous Dyslexics I also joined several communities on facebook so those positive articles would continue to come in my feed to share with him.

We also focus on what HE does really well and it’s a family joke:

– when he fixes a chair that wiggles “Well, that’s his dyslexic brain at work.”

– when he wins at a puzzle game “He’s got an unfair advantage – his dyslexic brain.”

– when he aces a test (even if it’s a modified test for his LD) “You can thank your dyslexic brain.”

We watch every positive video we can get ahold of like The Big Picture After we watched it, I helped him research how much schooling it takes to become a surgeon and discussed how that guy said his dyslexia HELPED him in his upper level classes and who Charles Schwab was, etc.

If…

you’ve already presented dyslexia to your child in a less positive way, take heart. You can help them see the positive side by reinforcing some of these positive ideas. This post was prompted by the question:

"How do you get your kids to recognize their strengths when all they see is their struggles and think so negatively about themselves?”

One of the things we do is create a family environment where the siblings are NOT allowed to capitalize on each other’s weaknesses to feel better about themselves. NO BULLYING. You can tease and have fun, but you can NOT hurt each other’s feelings. (We balance this with helping our kids take comments on the chin and not being too thin skinned.) However, there is a line they don’t cross.

Along that same vein, they are NOT allowed to speak lies about themselves. Saying “I’m stupid” (or something similar) is a punishable offense with swift and severe consequences. We can have an open conversation about something being hard or a struggle. However, we don’t trash-talk gifts from God and that’s what each child is.

Also, when he gets too frustrated with himself:

– we stop our book work and do more physical dyslexia exercises

– we have him eat something before we get back to it

– I remind him of the success stories we’ve read and watched

– and I remind him that I (his very busy and hard-working mother) am willing to invest all this time and effort on him because I KNOW he’s more capable than he even knows himself. And because I believe in him SO MUCH, I’d like him to trust me. Even if he doesn’t always believe in himself right at that moment, he can trust my vision of what he’s capable of.

We are thrilled to welcome Jessica Koerner to our team! With her profound love for all living things, extensive knowledge as a master gardener and master naturalist, and a heart overflowing with compassion, Jessica brings a unique perspective and invaluable expertise to our organization. Her dedication to helping those around her and her ability to connect with students on a deep level make her an exceptional educator.

Jessica 's educational journey has been marked by a commitment to learning and a desire to make a difference in the lives of children. She pursued her studies at Anderson University and IPFW, graduating in 2003 with a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and an accreditation in Middle School Science. In 2006, she furthered her education by studying Emergent Literacy through IU, Bloomington, working towards her Master's degree. Her thirst for knowledge led her to fulfill a lifelong dream in the summer of 2019 when she graduated from the Indiana Master Naturalist Program through Purdue County Extension. This program allowed her to work closely with Fox Island and Little River Wetlands to preserve natural habitats and wildlife in Fort Wayne.

Jessica 's teaching experience is extensive and diverse, covering various educational settings and student populations. She has taught in public elementary school classrooms, worked with struggling readers through small group intensives, taught in an autism specialized preschool, provided private tutoring, and even ran a homeschool co-op in her home for five years. Her commitment to education also led her to teach through the Northside Homeschool Co-op and provide instruction in life skills through Purdue County Extension for four years. Additionally, she is a dedicated homeschooling parent to her own three children, aged 16 to 7.

What sets Jessica apart as an educator is her remarkable ability to adapt to the needs of her students. Business Protocol: When Manners Matter

Teach introductions, telephone etiquette, and making small talk which are requirements for every adult. This class will practice these and more culminating in participating in interviews at the end of the semester. This 12 week course an enjoyable interactive and hands-on class designed to teach and build confidence in business protocol. No book is required.

Handouts, teacher notes, active games, competitions and so much fun learning and reinforcing lessons teens need to learn. These lessons were written for 7th-12th, but would be appropriate for 6th graders as well.

"Survivor Shake "

Objective: To practice proper handshaking etiquette and provide constructive feedback

Number of players: 4-30

Instructions:

Divide the class into teams of 3-4 players.
Each round, one team member will be selected to shake hands with all the other members of the class.
The class will then rate the handshake based on proper handshaking etiquette (i.e. firm grip, good eye contact, and appropriate duration).
The team member with the lowest score will be "voted off" and replaced by another team member in the next round.
The last team member standing at the end of the game is the "Shake Survivor."

Variations: To make it more challenging, you could have different rounds with different variations such as having to introduce themselves before the handshake and making eye contact, or having to shake hands with people of different age groups, etc

By playing this game, students will practice proper handshaking etiquette and receive feedback from their peers. It encourages self-awareness and helps students to understand how to adjust their handshaking behavior to different people and situations. Additionally, the game promotes teamwork, communication and time management as the team members have to complete the task together as efficiently and quickly as possible. Furthermore, the structure of the game, similar to the TV show survivor, makes it interactive and engaging for the students.

This is a summary of our American literature class for elementary students. The class is written for 24 weeks of classes, and it is aimed at students from 1st to 4th grade. Our homeschool group sessions typically last for one hour, so the lesson plans have been designed to accommodate that amount of time, but there is often additional material available. We offer a variety of options, including videos, songs, crafts, or a combination of activities, allowing you to choose what works best for your group of students, considering their abilities and ages.

WHO IS THIS WRITTEN FOR?

Many of the books are suitable for students up to the 6th grade level. If a teacher has a mix of first and 6th graders, they have the ability to tailor their activities and questions accordingly. This is all taken into consideration in the lesson plans, where some activities are better suited for younger students, while others are more appropriate for older ones. This also applies to the discussion questions, which are differentiated to suit different age groups.

The homeschool group lesson plans cover 24 weeks of activities, with the option to extend to 30 weeks or more. The group meets once a week for an hour to go over the lessons. The lessons are designed so students to do homework and read books at home with their parents. Then we bring the books to life in a group setting with their friends through games, crafts, and activities.

The lesson plans include:

the list of books
reading schedule
vocabulary specific to an elementary literature class
book discussion questions
a year-long project where students choose a piece of American history or literature to memorize
plus optional crafts, songs, coloring pages, video options, and active games

Several of the books are slated to read over two weeks. A few could definitely hold enough content to fill 3 weeks of activities and fun learning. Since ther e are so many classic book selections in these lesson plans, even if some are difficult to find or out of print, there are still plenty of excellent books to choose from.

If you're not in group classes some of the activities would be excellent for your own individual home school to make these books and a whole

year of learning come to life. Since they're free I highly encourage you to download them and look through them even for your own homeschool or group.

Part 2 of How to Motivate an Unmotivated Homeschool Child

This is the second post & video about helping motivate your unmotivated homeschool kid.

First were the prerequisite questions. O nce you have taken care of all of their basic needs no matter how old they are, now you want to work on

catching them being good.

I know this doesn't sound like much of a discipline technique. It may even sounds a little fluffy but truly if you have a child that is

associating themselves with an identity of negativity, they may just keep getting in trouble because of that. They'll think "I'm a bad boy" or "I'm a I'm a naughty girl," or even as a teenager "I'm not worth much." This is the most important time reaffirm the positive. You want them to see the potential of who they can become through the reflection of your eyes. You are telling them what their identity truly is - someone who's capable of

being good and obedient. You want to affirm that with evidence of catching them being good .

Maybe they're don't even see their own good behavior. Sometimes you have to stretch it a little - you might see them right before they do something naughty, like pinch their sister. So before they get a chance to do it you stop them and say "Oh, I'm so pleased that I saw that you were thinking about pinching your sister but you didn't do it. What a good boy that you're restraining yourself from doing that.

Another idea is to downplay or even occasionally ignore the bad. Since you don't want to exclusively reinforce the mistaken idea that no matter

what they do they're going to get in trouble. A lot of times they're trying to be good and they may feel that no matter how hard they're

trying they can't accomplish it. Catching them being good breaks that cycle of negativity.

Y ou can also use this to minimize or stop the amount of whining in your home. It works like this: they start to whine and you say "Honey, it's

hard for me to hear a whiny voice but if you speak in a normal tone of voice, then I think that I'd be able to hear that. Can you say that again in a regular tone of voice?" You have to model what that is and then when they do ask without whining, they get lots of affirmations, "Absolutely, you can have another cracker." Y ou are truly reinforcing the good behavior all the while you're refraining from labeling them. Saying things like, "You're so whiny. Why are you doing that?" doesn't accomplish anything.

I love catching them being good, and it's even better if you can reward them for it. Maybe just a little thing like: you get to help stir dinner, or sure you can bake cookies with me, or for a teen you can reward them with the screen time that they've been asking for. You just give them a little bit extra to reinforce their good behavior.

It's really important to to not consider this task of catching them being good something that is going to make an immediate change. This is something you're doing for the long haul, but it will pay off tremendous rewards.

Another tip is to have a lot of affirmative language, a lot of enthusiasm in your tone of voice, smiles on your face, and maybe pat them on the head or back for being good. Different children are going to feel loved in different ways, so and touch is important to every child, but some children especially need more touch than others. For those kids part of reinforcing the good behaviors will definitely include touch.

Prerequisites to Behavior Modification or Motivational Techniques

One of the questions I get fairly often is ‘How do I motivate an unmotivated homeschool student?’ The tell me, “I'm doing everything I can making their favorite meals and trying to make school fun. They just (fill in the blank) won't get out of bed, won't do their math, etc.

The first part of the solution is the same as you’d do when they were a baby. Be sure that they have what they need:

· Are they hungry?

· Are they tired?

· Are they stressed? Is there stress going on in the home that they may be sensing even if they don't exactly know what's going on? Sometimes things that parents are stressed about even the kids can sense.

· Have they had an adequate amount of large motor activity? Do they have enough down time? Are they having enough time off of screens so that they can really get out a lot of their energy?

Asking these questions first are the prerequisite before we start any type of behavior modification or attending to disciplinary issues. I'll have more tips on this issue coming up soon. Good luck with your home school!!

I've got kids that had to work hard to be able to accomplish what was completely within their grasp, but I had to present it in such a way that it was much more accessible to them. ADHD and dyslexia plus kids that were hard to academically challenge are all part of our family. I have taught many, MANY group classes for homeschool kids. I've run co-ops. I've started homeschool groups. I've initiated and sustained support groups for homeschool parents. Right now my passion is teaching other families how to homeschool - therefore this website and channel.

All of my kids have used lesson plans that I wrote and gleaned from a variety of different places. I am going to share them ALL with you. I'm downloading all of my lesson plans for free, and these videos are meant to walk another homeschool mom through how to teach from those lesson plans. Eventually they'll all be online for free and you can download them and use them at your discretion. Because they're my individual lesson plans, please don't sell them, but you're free to use them and use them in your group classes as much as would benefit you.
